One of the supremely gifted writers for piano, Chopin used the instrument to convey subtle tone-colours and a degree of emotional intensity hitherto unknown. Much of his later work was for solo piano, composed in forms that he adapted and developed, such as the Nocturne, the Waltz, the Polish Mazurka and the Polonaise. While beautifully expressive melodies are to be found in abundance on this second volume of Piano Favourites (Volume 1 is available on 8.553170), works such as the Grande Valse, Barcarolle, Scherzo No. 2 and the Fantasie in F minor demonstrate that Chopin also possessed a unique and often complex sense of form and colour.
